Reviews/thoughts on DVD
An amazon review stated the show is censored. Can anyone verfiy, Amazon reviews are not always the most trusted resource?
Thoughts on the show as a whole?
Thanks,

I've only watched the first seven minutes or so, but yeah, it's pretty great. I don't know if it's censored or not, though.
I will say that there are some songs missing, that if they were included the DVD would go from a B to an A- in a minute in my book. Most especially
"Leave the Biker" and "Troubled Times". There are others, too, but it's too long of a list. Of course, it's too much to ask for them to play all
of their greatest songs in one night, so I'm not that upset.
I do think some special features would be nice, other than the acoustic set, which I haven't yet watched. Maybe just some interviews or even a music
video.
I'm just happy they finally released the DVD we've been begging for for years.

I found a review on the DVD in the Rolling Stone magazine I got last week. It only got 2 stars and the review said:
"Shot for widescreen on a bright and broad soundstage, this antiseptic 2005 live set is crazy with TV cliches like gratuitous crane shots. The
vocal-heavy mix favors a lyrically wry but stiff Adam Schlesinger, reducing the power-pop vets to backing musicians who can't catch a vibe until the
show's nearly over with "Maureen.""
I don't think that's a good thing...
Don't go away mad... Just go away.

I just found out about this, they don't seem to have mentioned it on the mailing list? Does anyone know if it will get a UK release?

I think the DVD is great - I'm just happy to have a clean, extended copy of this show. The bonus stuff is cool too.
"Censored" = "I gotta get my _______ together" in Bright Future in Sales.
...and it may be the whiskey talking, but the whiskey says I miss you every day...

I doubt it'll get a UK release. I don't think they're big enough to warrant Region 2 specific DVD release.
I picked up a copy from Ebay earlier, $17 USD delivered from Canada.

My copy arrived this morning.
I've seen FoW live twice, and it's just not the same, sadly. That Rolling Stone review does hold some water I'm afraid. The incessant sweeping
camera shots are irritatating, and the audience look as lively as an army of mannequins. Fountains of Wayne are great, but there's little by way of
infectious atmosphere. The gig wasn't filmed in the greatest venue for live music, I just feel it doesn't feel as 'electric' as it should, and
it's underselling FoW's greatness.
I've got my money's worth from the acoustic bonus features alone though. Someone to Love is excellent, as is I95. Little by way of charisma from
the band - they're just getting on with it, you'd think they're all hungover... There seems to be a distinct lack of joy in that room.
I sound a bit moany. All told I'm really pleased to have the DVD.

you know, for a band thats as awesome and quirky as FOW I would like to see them live ....but try somthing a bit kooky to stand out.
I've always thought it would be great if any band did a "live from our basement" concert. you know, just someones crappy unfinished looking
basement, instead of a huge audeince just a couple stoners strung out on some beat up couch....but heres the thing...have it proffesionally filmed.
have an announcer and everything and then have the band come down from upstairs holding their instruments...maybe one of them bump their head on the
low ceiling on the way down.
but have them act and talk as if they are playing in front of a large audeince. and then maybe have a little intermission where one of their mothers
comes down from upstairs with a tray of sandwhiches.
THAT would be FAR more worthy and entertaining of a interesting band like FOW than some sterile boring concert.

here's a review from PopMatters : http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/71468-fountains-of-wayne-no-better-place/
doesn't look good either. they started off with a praise
"No one will ever, ever doubt the pop mastery of Fountains of Wayne."
then as expected with such sentence, they're getting let down
"Yet cranking out classic studio gems is not the same as giving a thrilling live show, and as No Better Place painfully proves, Fountains of Wayne
were never meant to be a proper touring concern."

DVD Thoughts...
Just watched the DVD after receiving it this morning - woo! Some bullet point thoughts, as I'm very lazy...
-Excellent - a Fountains of Wayne DVD!!!
-Excellent - the band sound brilliant!
-Excellent - a nice looking venue!!!
-Excellent - a decent setlist
-Poor - The audience - they just don't move. Whatever happened to the moshpits of London circa 1999/2003? I was part of them!
-Poor - The venue for it's atmosphere
-Average - The band's banter on stage.
-Poor - The lack of music videos/documentary footage.
-Excellent - The acoustic performance make the DVD worth buying alone - great sounding acoustics. Loving that Adam piano action.
-Excellent - a Fountains of Wayne DVD!!!
Quite lazy, but hopefully gets my point across...

I liked the DVD. I mean, I wasn't expecting my mind to be fully blown away or anything. They sounded great, and they played songs I haven't heard in
a really, really long time, so it was kind of nostalgic for me. I miss the pre-Traffic and Weather days, if only because it was a more carefree time
in my life and I spent most of it being in love with this band.
That being said - the acoustic set was definitely the best part of the DVD - if only for Adam's yellow piano and Chris' beard.

I was reading what the reviewer said .....
"Worst of all, as a performer, Collingwood looks positively bored with his surroundings. Though his disaffected croon remains unaffected in a live
context"
and was thinking, seeing as he suffers from seasonal affective disorder,
technically that would make him the seasonal affective disaffected unaffective crooner.

My copy arrived today, I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
In an interesting twist, despite ordering it from the US it had a New Zealand postage type sticker on it.
Anyway, it will be essential viewing this weekend when I can relax.

ok, finally got it today at barnes and nobles. I dont know why I bitch about things before I know what the fuck I'm talking about.
frankly I thought it was great. it was an oddly somber performance for such a fun quirky band, but I didnt have a problem with the camera angles and
all that, I thought the camera work was functional, albeit it was totally the chris collingwood show.
these camera people showed they really dont understand a rock group dynamic. maybe it was new to them and they normally film shakespear in the park
or siegfried and roy or somethin cause they seemingly dont know things like when you hear a solo that means one should cut to the lead guitar player
and grasp that just because the singer who also plays guitar moves around a bit when it happens that doesnt mean he is the one playing the fucking
solo.
you know I never understand how they sound so messy and uncontrolled at regular live shows and then the controlled shows like this and say, soho live
they sound so clean and on point. I mean chris sounded pretty fucking amazing if you ask me. he was really on key and in fantastic form except for the
tragic falsetto parts during" sick day". he pretty much never sings off key especially in the acoustic stuff. and jodys parts and guitar sound
which sounded different yet better than then the studio was also a highpoint.
and I LIVE for studio enviroment performances. the bonus tracks live in the studio...seriously awesome. I'm starting to think these guys sound messy
at regular shows because they have shitty house sound at the shitholes they play at. cause they are totally accomplished playing their songs live.
I would love more in the studio footage of them recording a CD even forgiving the fact adam with a beard looks strangely like dave matthews with more
hair and chris lookes kinda like beeker from the muppets with glasses and a beard.
maybe even releasing them on I-tunes them doing more in the studio versions of our favorite songs.
anyways overall well worth the money IMO.

Watched it a few days ago. it's an odd DVD. Not really a venue for that kinda music, it's badly mixed you can barely hear the band. Too bad.

DVD Review
I thought the DVD was awesome, they did some great performances of a bunch of their best material. I think Chris seams a bit reserved onstage though,
not sure why. One thing they could've done to improve would be to talk a little more in between songs, but maybe that's just me.
