I hope some of those tunes that did not make the record see the light of day somehow. If he moves to LA it will be a great loss for MA.

I'm still hoping for a solo record from Chris, so my ears perked up a little bit when he mentioned extra songs. I'm glad to hear his inspiration came back a little bit for this album.

As a New Englander myself, I'd rather Chris stick around, but I get what he means. I always spend a fair bit of winter wandering around my house in a miserable haze.

he should totally move to LA. anyone who has seasonal effective disorder has no business living in the east.

I wonder what he means by he had more money then as a programmer.that cant be true, each member of Fountains of Wayne must rake in like 3000-5000 dollars a piece each show.

That Chris interview is dynamite! I suffer from seasonal affective disorder too, but living in Scotland and not having enough money to move somewhere with less harsher winters, there's nothing much I can do about it. I might give those lamps a try though.

"Power-pop veterans keep the excellent yarn coming"

Didn't know whether to post this here or in the pre-release discussion, but I figure since it's a review...

I got August 4th's Rolling Stone today, which happened to include, as I'd expected, a review of "Sky Full of Holes."

It had been given 3 1/2 stars out of 5, which isn't too bad, but not something my Fountains of Wayne-biased mind would agree upon.

The review went as follows:

"For 15 years, Fountains of Wayne have been rock's sharpest storytellers, chronicling the dreams and setbacks of middle-class types with heartbreaking precision and crunchy guitar hooks. Their fifth LP is rootsier than usual, but the characters are as vivid as ever. There's the boozer looking for love on an Amtrak ("Acela"); the woman reliving teenage nightmares at her parents' country house ("The Summer Place"); the hapless hipster entrepreneurs in "Richie and Ruben." The songs are filled with jokes - but the punch lines often turn into epiphanies. And Fountains of Wayne nail the boredom of the touring life: 'In between the stops at the Cracker Barrel/And 40 movies with Will Ferrell/I need some way to occupy my time.' "

"The Summer Place" and "Richie and Ruben" were noted as the key tracks.

(Full credit for the review goes to Jody Rosen.)

I know. Blake Shelton's new album got a weaker review (2 1/2 stars), and he was the one who got the feature, long-ass, full-page review that I never read.

I'm not even sure why I'm still subscribed to Rolling Stone. Maybe I'm just waiting for the day they give a good review to an artist I actually like.

Somehow, it just didn't cross my mind that Rolling Stone would have the link online...

Gah, August 2 is getting so close now! I'm not gonna let any not-fantastic reviews distort my pre-made decision to buy "Sky Full of Holes."

not only that he says "Singer..... Adam Schlesinger is appreciatively merciless to his characters", setting up someone who is soon-to-be-dumped in a compromising situation: "Staring at the sun with no pants on."
and ...."although ...Schlesinger should stop and think before proudly throwing around the year 1998."

both of which are chris songs. its like the writer just assumes this is adams band.

chris after awhile must be like jan from the brady bunch......"everybodys always

Well, I certainly like the comparison to the Jayhawks in the Washington Post review. Don't see why that's necessarily a bad thing. But to each his/her own.

A. I guess it’s the corniest thing in the world to say that I think it’s the best thing we’ve done, but honestly this is the record I’m happiest with the final result, even though it was the hardest one to do.

I'm not surprised chris is happy with it. he brought some of the best ever Fountains of Wayne songs this time around.

you always know adam is going to bring some awesome stuff,a road song....acela.....radio bar...richie and rueben.
but with chris you never know.

chris's tunes are so good I'm starting to worry he isnt going to do a solo CD anytime soon cause going by how good his songs were maybe he gave Fountains of Wayne his A material instead of holding it back for a solo CD. he doesnt seem like adam in that he writes alot of songs.

these guys were definetly equals on this CD. I would give it totally to chris if adam didnt pull out a road song.
to me this is their best CD. its always great when your not dissapointed when a band takes so long in between releases.you finally get it and its as good as you hoped.

I like the first review better than the second one:

Fountains of Wayne return with 'Sky Full of Holes,' two NYC shows

Album: Fountains of Wayne, Sky Full of Holes (Lojinx)

Yeah, that second review is lame, but I like that they bring up Weezer. I usually bring up Weezer when I'm trying to sell people on Fountains of Wayne. The thing is, Fountains of Wayne is better than Weezer and 100% more consistent, but they're less popular. So if they're the "poor man's Weezer", so be it, perhaps the poor man has a little more sense. ;)

The first article is interesting, too. I felt my ears burning at this: "The band’s audience may not be colossal, but its members are devoted. For a group of notoriously understated guys, Fountains of Wayne are a band that prompts fanatic allegiance."

Don't think anyone posted this review. Just another short(ish) review with a 3 1/2-star rating (and a hint of broken English, but it's whatever).
