Where has it gone wrong for Fountains of Wayne?

I just dont understand how such a amazing and talented group have had such little chart success and minimal promoting of albums especially here in the uk. When i see some of todays current bands doing so well in the charts i just cant help but think to myself that Fountains of Wayne are so much better but still they dont have the success they deserve. So now to the point, Who is to blame? is it the record company, the audience not liking it and so on. Please give me your thoughts.

I think a lot of people just don't "get" it.

Think the Fountains of Wayne guys aren't "emo" enough.....
They all need to dye their hair black and wear tight girl pants... they can borrow them from Jody... Then, of course.. they'll have to start whining more and singing about death and... well... anyway... That probably wouldn't work either...

There\'s something blurry about Another Girl...

I don't understand the angst................
I am just happy that I know of them and get a lot of enjoyment from the music they do make.
That others don't is their loss.............
As for whose fault it is? What difference does it make. At this point the die is cast, and we who know are just along for the ride...................:banoonoo:

its not Fountains of Wayne fault, its our culture that worships youth and a infatuation with black culture that programs young people into thinking good music is all about drums and nasty ass shouting rather than talent for good song writing.

That's what it is. That crappy r'n'b shit that is on the radio all the time! F*ck it. I listen to 80's radio nowadays, that was great music!

I think its an even mixture of both the media and our culture (by 'our' I mean the Western world). People listen to crap music like Akon et al because their peers and the MTV style media is telling them that its cool. It just seems like people are willing to listen to bad music and completely miss some of the better yet lesser known music out there like Fountains of Wayne. Hell, in the UK we had the Crazy Frog at the top of the charts! :dammit: (For those who do not know what this was, be glad.)

I'd just like to say I don't think anything has "gone wrong" for them. They just aren't on radio much. That doesn't mean people aren't listening. I think Adam said in an interview once that he didn't expect to get rich in the music industry. Maybe it's just because most of the music I listen to is even less known than Fountains of Wayne, but I consider them pretty successful. They had a hit single and they have a fan base. Maybe they aren't millionaires or anything, but they've done alright.

sooperfantastic i agree with what you just said. But my point is that they are underachieving and its a shame as they have so much to give. As fans it makes no difference to us, as we are the lucky ones who have found them. But from the bands point of view i think they may feel a little bit disapionted with how things have gone after there hit with Stacey's mom. I personally think they should of kicked on from there and become a really big band. I also dont understand how 'Bright future in Sales' was not released as a single. I heard Adam say in a interview that the music industry is not the quickest way to get rich but he never said he dosent expect to get rich.

I think thats the destiny of older bands. hope to God you find a dedicated hardcore audience after one gets in his 30's-40's
as one can no longer count on airplay or video play to sell.

That's probably where Fountains of Wayne has gone wrong. They have managed to find fans that care just enough to complain but not enough to do anything about it. ;)

Didn't Adam say once that Fountains of Wayne was "a cover band at heart"?

There's your answer right there, I think. No group is going to make it big with that kind of mind set. Not that there's anything wrong with that. You have to admit that Fountains of Wayne's style is to borrow from everyone. They do a great job of it, but they're not original enough to step up to the next level. I don't know if they have a ground-breaking CD in them.

Rock 'n' Roll has seen quite a few power pop bands come and go. Fountains of Wayne has lasted quite a while, considering.

heh, just yesterday I was listening to valley of malls and I finally figured it out what it reminded me of. walking on the sun by smashmouth!

I love traffic and weather but I think their next CD will be a reaction to the softer side of Traffic and Weather and will probably be pretty guitar heavy.

I actually find Akon way more interesting than the Stereophonics - I find watching paint dry slightly more interesting than them, and yet they've had number one albums over here...

I can't really explain it. It's not like I've never heard Fountains of Wayne songs on the radio. They just need a few more DJs to catch on and be brave and not play that Fergie song for the 2097865th time and stick Someone To Love on.

I'm doing my best, I've forced about 5 people, and counting, in my office to listen to Welcome Interstate Managers, and I got an American guy I know who'd never heard of them to listen to Traffic & Weather.
Plus there's me website that gets about 0.3 visitors a day, ha.

I've gotten two people to become fans. I could have gotten more but in the past few years I've kind of given up, because for every person I made a fan there were about ten more people who just wanted me to shut up about them already. :rotfl:

Hey people,
do you know if there's a street team for Fountains of Wayne? I'm constantly beating people up into listening to songs and albums cos I too can't understand why they're not more popular.
I got some people interested on a Shawn Colvin forum.
