- Ric Ocasek, formerly of the Cars, mentioned Fountains of Wayne in a recent interview. Here is an excerpt... Question: So you’ve seen the Fountains Of Wayne video, right? With the little kids dressed in full Cars regalia?
Ocasek: Yeah. In fact, I even met one of the Fountains Of Wayne guys – I think it was Adam [Schlesinger] – in a studio one day. They wrote me a letter and asked me to be in the video, and I said “No, but good luck.” It was a nice tribute. And they used a Cars sample – it’s gotta be, because it’s the exact same sound from that old amp and that guitar. I don’t think anybody could replicate it, so they must’ve just sampled it. I’m always flattered if somebody’s paying some kind of homage to the Cars. (The Wave Magazine)

- A Horse with No Name, Named Adam. Adam Schlesinger and James "Corgan Killer" Iha are doing yet another heterosexual project together. There's no real story behind it, except that I also like cats. My current publishing company is called Vaguely Familiar Music, which is what a couple of my songs are to some people." Chris, on the other hand, had a much more in-depth and pretentious explanation for Monkey Demon Music: "I can tell you that I first came across it in a Richard Fariña novel [called] 'Been Down So Long, It Looks Like Up To Me,' Fariña uses the Demon to represent some sort of impending, or overdue, insanity/anxiety that finally takes root in a delirious, drug-addicted, ne'er-do-well college student. The scene referencing the 'monkey demon,' though, is nothing new; I [...] found numerous spiritual references to the beast in old Chinese literature, as well as similarities to native American myths, of which Fariña may well have been aware." - ChartAttack be Tellin' the Future! In a recent article (linked below) Chart Attack states: "Sure, the double album worked for Pink Floyd, but it didn't fare so well for the Eels, Nine Inch Nails, Fountains Of Wayne and countless others." Now, I'm no music industry expert, but isn't it customary for an album to come out before it is declared a failure? Granted, Out-of-State Plates isn't going to break any sales records, but give me a John Stossel-sized break and wait until it's released. (ChartAttack)

- Rolling Stone gave "Maureen" threes stars and recommends it as one of its five songs to download this month. The item reads: It's no "Stacy's Mom," but this tossed-off single - the tale of a dude forced to hear too much detail about his hot female friend's sex life - boasts an ear-snagging, stuttered hook and enough guitar muscle to smuggle Fountains of Wayne back on the radio. Which is, of course, where they belong. (Rolling Stone | Discuss)

- "Maureen" is already getting some good press. Glen Gamboa of Newsday writes: It's a thin line between clever and annoying. Somehow Fountains of Wayne manages to always stay on the clever side and its new single "Maureen" (Virgin), from its upcoming B-sides and rarities album "Out-of-State Plates." Another uptempo power-pop winner, "Maureen" is sweet and catchy, with just enough snarkiness to keep it cool (Newsday)

Fountains of Wayne, on the other hand, understands that perfectly on this bleakly funny ballad. (The Onion)

- Merry Christmas! The NFL's use of "All Kinds of Time" continues to generate some good press for Fountains of Wayne. MTV had this to say: "It was inevitable that the NFL would use Fountains of Wayne's "All Kinds of Time" in a promo spot, only why did it take them so long to realize the perfect match? After it premiered on last week's broadcast of "Monday Night Football," the song, whose title is one of football's most oft-spoken clichés, will be used throughout the remainder of the season. Like the 30-second spots made for TV, a longer 60-second spot displaying a montage of great quarterbacks will be shown in stadiums. ... Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Fountains of Wayne's label, S-Curve, confirms that there are plans in the works to release an album's worth of B-sides sometime in 2005. The album will pull stray tracks from almost all of the band's releases, dating back to its first single in 1996.
