It took a wildly infectious song and one of the most unforgettable videos in rock history ("Stacy's Mom") to finally put Fountains of Wayne in the national limelight in 2003, even though the band had been kicking around and releasing high quality pop songs dating back to its formation in 1996. "Traffic and Weather" is just one more collection of near perfect pop, filled with relentless hooks, artful arrangements, clever lyrics and rich harmonies. It's a combination some may take for granted from this Adam Schlesinger/Chris Collingwood-led quartet, because they make song craftsmanship sound easy. It's far from that, and such inside cuts as "Strapped For Cash,"This Better be Good," and "Someone to Love," there are enough moments of lyrical intrigue and subliminal musical nods to the past to make one's head spin while toes never stop tapping.
FOW has a penchant for wrapping sobering tales inside shimmering music, like they do in the title cut and one of the best songs they've ever released, the Gram Parsons/Dylan-esque diamond "Fire in the Canyon."
